Dan Bauer received his doctorate in developmental psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2000, and completed a post-doctoral fellowship in applied statistics in 2002, also at UNC.  He was a faculty member at North Carolina State University from 2002-2004, before returning to UNC.  At UNC, he is a professor in the Department of Psychology, a member of the quantitative psychology graduate training program, a member of the L.L. Thurstone Psychometric Laboratory, and a member of the Center for Developmental Science.  His research centers on the development and application of latent variable models, including factor analysis, item response theory models, structural equation models, latent class analysis, finite mixture models, and growth curve models.  A principal goal of his research is to facilitate the analysis of longitudinal data, particularly with respect to problem behaviors and developmental psychopathology.
